Preface

PHILOSOPHY

Early training is extremely important in the developmentof a child.  An early childhood experience permeated by Christianprinciples provides a child with added richness.  Not only are their mental,emotional, social, and physical needs recognized, but also their spiritualneeds.  The result of such a situation will be a well-rounded personality,which acknowledges the daily presence of Christ in their life.

SCHOOL PURPOSE

Faith Lutheran School is an integral part of the ministryof Faith Lutheran Church.  The purpose of Faith Lutheran School is toprovide Christian education in partnership with parents so that:

§        Children will be provided with a comprehensive program of academiceducation.

§        Children will be nurtured in the word and will of God.

§        Children may develop their talents and skills for responsibleChristian living and service.

§        Children may in faith learn to recognize Jesus Christ as theirLord and Savior and grow in their relationship with Him and service to Him.

§        Children by God’s grace may experience a full Christian life onearth and be assured of eternal life.

§        Children may learn to recognize themselves as persons of worthmade by God in his image.

§        Children may learn to understand and appreciate their talents asgifts from God.

OBJECTIVES

The role of Faith Lutheran School is to satisfy the needsof its children in the following areas:

1.     The need to trust:   

a.     Their Lord’s will in all life situations.

b.     Their parents who love them

c.     Their teachers who support the parents in their effort.

2.     The need to explore:                

a.     Their senses.

b.     Their mental and physical capabilities.

c.     Their environment.

d.     Their creative abilities.

3.     The need to live with others:

a.     Sharing.

b.     Taking turns.

c.     Consideration of others.

 

In acknowledging these needs, Faith Lutheran Schoolwill provide your child with a setting of consistency and stability. Your childwill develop an interest and joy in learning and a feeling of security, success,and responsibility.

ADMISSION POLICY   

Faith Lutheran School admits students of any race, color,national and ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs and activitiesgenerally accorded or made available to students of the School.  It doesnot discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin inadministration of its educational policies, admission policies, and other schooladministered programs. TABLEOF CONTENTS

ELIGIBILITY

           3 Year Pre-School             3 Years old on or before September 1 and toilet trained

 4 Year Pre-School              4 Years old on or before September 1 and toilet trained

           Kindergarten                      5 Years old on or before September 1

           First Grade                         6 Years old on or before September 1

NOTE:  All new students must present a birthcertificate, social security number and current immunization record.

REQUIRED IMMUNIZATIONS

Minimum – 3 DPT

Minimum – 3 Polio

2 MMR’s – 1 after 15 months

Hepatitis B Series

Chicken Pox Vaccination

Health forms are required of all Pre-School and Pre-Kindergarten students and should be completed by the time the child reportsfor the first day of school, or as soon as possible, but no later than October1.  The State of Illinois requires that all children entering Kindergartenand Fifth Grade have a physical and dental examination.  In addition, acomplete health history is required.  All elementary students notpreviously enrolled in the Kindergarten and Faith Lutheran School must submitmedical and dental forms.  All forms will be provided for registration andshould be completed and returned to the school in September.  Child(ren)enrolled during the school year will be required to submit forms at time ofenrollment.

ACCEPTANCE

In accepting children for the school, theapplications are considered as follows:

1.     Children currently enrolled in Faith Lutheran School.

2.     Children of members and prospective members of Faith Lutheran Church.

3.     Children from other Lutheran churches.

4.     Applications from the community.  These are accepted in order oftheir receipt.

New Kindergarten and Elementary students and theirparents/guardians will meet with the Principal and/or the appropriate Teacherbefore final acceptance to the School.     

ENROLLMENT

A staff member will test new students enrolling or re-enrolling at Faith Lutheran School with a standardized math and reading testto determine their present grade level. Students will then be placed in thegrade that will match their academic and emotional needs.

The recommendation for acceptance will be based on:

1.     The student must be within six months of the grade level for which he orshe is tested.

2.     The student must have a previous satisfactory discipline record.

3.     The parent, student, principal and teacher unanimously agree on gradeplacement.

4.     Parent(s) will provide a copy of academic records from previouseducational facility and required health records. TABLEOF CONTENTS

ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance of your child promotes educationalgrowth and a positive attitude for learning.  Parents are reminded theirregular attendance interferes greatly with the student’s progress. Therefore, we caution against unnecessary absences.  In case of absence,the procedure for notifying the School is as follows:

Each day that a child is absent, a parent/guardian isrequired to phone the School prior to 9:00 a.m. at 466-9153 or the church officeat 466-3833 and give a reason for the child’s absence.

Before the child returns to school, they must be feverfree for at least 24 hours.

By law, children with communicable diseases are notpermitted to attend school.  These diseases require the following procedurebefore the child returns to school:

1.     Chicken Pox – all pox must have scabbed before child returns to school.

2.     Impetigo – required a doctor’s note as proof of the child’srecovery.

3.     Strep Infection – child must be kept at home at least 24 hours afterreceiving their first dose of prescribed medication.

4.     Head Lice – child must be treated and free of infestation, and will beinspected

5.     before attending class.

Health records will be kept on file for each student. 

To prevent the spread of colds and other communicablediseases, it is advisable to keep your child home when he or she shows any ofthe following symptoms: sore throat, runny nose, skin rash, excessive fatigue,enlarged glands, fever, vomiting, earache, headache and chills.

Teacher/staff will provide parent(s) with a Medical Formif any type of medical treatment is given to their child(ren) during schoolattendance. TABLEOF CONTENTS

CONFERENCES and PROGRESS REPORTS

Report cards will be issued quarterly for Pre-School,Kindergarten and Elementary Grades.  Parent-teacher conferences arescheduled for the first quarter.  Third quarter conferences will bescheduled only as needed.  Students in 3rd – 8thGrades will receive mid-quarter reports.

The primary objective of conferences is to establish amore harmonious working relationship between home and school.  They serveto strengthen the mutual interest of the parent and teacher in the child’sprogress and to assist both parents and teach in following a course of actionwhich will best serve the needs of the child. TABLEOF CONTENTS

CHRISTIAN TRAINING

Each day includes devotions and instructions in Biblestudies and Christian truths.  This religious instruction will act as afoundation for the child’s daily Christian growth and life style.  Thechild learns how to lead a Christian life in word and deed.  He learns theeffectiveness of prayer and to trust in God because “with God nothing isimpossible”.  You, as a parent, should take an interest in what yourchild is learning.  Therefore, you will be informed of what your child isbeing taught.  For more information, contact your child’s teacher. TABLEOF CONTENTS

COMMUNICATIONS

All concerns dealing with incidents involving your childor the academic progress of your child need to be communicated with theclassroom teacher first.  The principal must be included after parents havespoken to the teacher, if unable to resolve the situation.  At thediscretion of the principal, the school board will be involved ONLY afterparents, teacher and principal have met and are unable to reach a satisfactorydecision.  We thank you for your support and cooperation.

DISCIPLINE

For behavior, which is not in harmony with the policiesor intentions of the school as a Christian institution, the school reserves theright to discipline and, if necessary, to suspend or to ask parents to withdrawtheir child.

Prior to this drastic action, attempts will be made tosolve the difficulty through teacher-pupil-principal discussions.  Thepolicies found in the discipline code will be used to help all children to bebrought up in a Christ-like manner.

DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES

LEVEL 1 Infractions such as...

1. Disrespect to other students or teachers.

2. Language misuse.

3. Dress-Codeviolations.

CONSEQUENCE: Warning conference by teacher with student.

LEVEL 2  Infractions such as...

1.  Repeat of Level1’s misbehaviors.

2. Rough play.

3. Careless disregard to property.

CONSEQUENCES: Conference with teacher and parent.  Loss of 1 day of recess. Principal notified of occurrence.

LEVEL 3  Infractions such as...

1.   Repeat of Level2’s offenses.

2.     Intentional fighting, shoving or physical hurting.

3.     Stealing or cheating.

4.     Insubordination- Obvious refusal to obey authority figure in talking or obscenegestures.

CONSEQUENCES: Conference with teacher, parent and Principal.  Loss of 1 day of recess. Also Detention served either during or after school at discretion of teacherand/or Principal.

LEVEL 4 Infractions such as...

1.   Repeat of Level3’s offenses.

2.     Truancy or cutting class.

3.     Threatened or actual harm to authority figure.

CONSEQUENCE: Immediate dismissal to Principal’s office with consequence to be an out ofschool suspension for remainder of day and next full day. Conference shall beheld with teacher, parent and Principal.

LEVEL 5  Infractions such as...

1.  Repeat of Level4’s offenses.

2.  Use, possession, orsale of any illegal drug/tobacco products/alcohol.

3.  Possession, use or threatened use of weapon or look-alike.

CONSEQUENCE: Immediate removal of child from school until hearing with Day school board. Principal shall report such occurrences to the local Police Department. Conference shall be held with teacher, parent and Principal.  Principal andSchool Board  will determine the consequences.

*Either parent or Principal may request the Pastor to beincluded in any conference as deemed necessary.

*Parent support of the discipline policy with furthercorrective measures at home should reinforce the school’s message that thechild needs to improve behavior. TABLEOF CONTENTS

DRESS CODE

Children are expected to be neat and clean in theirappearance.  Modesty is always “in style”.  The appearance ofclothing or messages portrayed on clothing should reflect the positive Christianvalues our school teaches.  Out of respect for our Lord, children’sattire on Chapel Day, should be reflective of that worship experience.

Dress Code (Grades PS-8th)

Boys

1.     Pants are to be neat, clean and hemmed.

2.     Shoes will be worn at all times.  No flip-flops during Recess or P.E.

3.     Socks are required in P.E. class.

 

Girls

1.     Blouses shall portray modesty.  No Belly shirts.

2.     Skirts, slacks, jeans are to be neat, clean and hemmed.

3.     Shoes are to be worn at all times.  No clogs or flip-flops during Recess orP.E.

4.     Socks are required in P.E. class.

 

Do Not Wear:

Any garment with writing orpictures of questionable nature.

Tank tops or sleeveless shirtsas an outer garments in all grades.  They can be worn underneath a sleevedshirt.

Any ill-fitting or see-throughclothing.

Dangling earrings.  Forsafety reasons, earrings dangling 1 inch or more are not allowed.

Hats in the building whenclasses are in session or during formal activities unless special permission isgiven.

Sweatpants as school apparelin grades 3-8.

Boys shall not wear earrings.

Notes: All Grades

Fingertip length, hemmed, neatshorts may be worn.

Regardless of temperature,shorts are allowed only up until October 15th and after April 1st.

Hygiene is a health issue. Parental guidance is needed in this area, especially as students reach puberty. TABLEOF CONTENTS

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Extra-curricular activities are those activities thatoccur outside of the normal school hours.  This includes choir, sports,field trips, etc.

The sports program consists of interscholasticcompetition for boys and girls in a variety of sports.  Due to the limitednumber of players at Faith Lutheran School, not all sports are available eachyear.

A detailed policy on the sports program is passed out atthe beginning of each season. TABLEOF CONTENTS

FAMILY WORSHIP      

While Faith Lutheran Church is offering an agency to aidparents in providing for the Christian Education of their children, it does notremove the God-given responsibility of the parents to supply Christian trainingat home.  We urge you, as parents to join your child in Church and SundaySchool attendance.  If you would like further information about devotions,church or Bible classes, feel free to talk to the teachers or Pastor. Members of Faith Lutheran Church are expected to adhere to the WorshipAttendance Policy and are required to acknowledge receipt of that policy atregistration.

FIELD TRIPS

Educational trips to enrich classroom experiences will betaken.  Parent volunteers are needed to accompany the class and providetransportation.  All students are expected to participate.  Writtenpermission forms are required for each trip. TABLEOF CONTENTS

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Faith Lutheran School, a ministry of Faith LutheranChurch, is supported by contributions from the congregation, usage fees, tuitionpayments and support groups.

LUNCH PROGRAM

Faith Lutheran School participates in the National SchoolLunch Program which provides nutritional lunches on a daily basis.  Inaccordance with Federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, thisinstitution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color,national origin, sex, age, or disability.  (Not all prohibited bases applyto all programs.) TABLEOF CONTENTS

LIBRARY

The school library is located on the lower lever. Children have access to the library during designated library hours and are heldresponsible for the books checked out.  A fee will be charged for any lostor damaged library book.

MID-WEEK CHAPEL SERVICE

Chapel services are held each Wednesday morning duringthe school year.  This is not a substitute for Sunday morning worshipservices.  Parents are most welcome and encouraged to attend.  Theoffering at each service is designated to a charitable purpose or agency. TABLEOF CONTENTS

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Teachers welcome parental involvement.  Volunteerhelp from parents, grandparents, etc., is needed for special projects, libraryassistance, and various classroom activities.  The school also has need ofroom parents to help with parties and field trips

PARENT-TEACHER LEAGUE

The Parent Teacher League (PTL) of Faith Lutheran Schoolis affiliated with the National Lutheran PTL.  Its purpose is to foster aworking relationship between parents and the teachers for the benefit of thestudents and to help provide some of the “extras” that can make our schoolbetter.  The PTL sponsors several educational and fund-raising activitiesthroughout the year.  Membership is open to parents of children enrolled inthe school. TABLEOF CONTENTS

PARTIES

Parties scheduled throughout the school year areChristmas, Valentines Day, and Easter.  Volunteers are needed to providerefreshments and the planning of the party.  Children may want to celebratetheir birthdays during the school year.  Please advise the teacher inadvance. TABLEOF CONTENTS

PLAY EQUIPMENT

To eliminate the problem of loss and damage, ALL TOYS andELECTRONIC DEVICES are  to be left at home unless the teacher has requestedthat students bring them for show and tell or other academic purpose.  Toysthat are not authorized will be collected and held by the teacher until parentscan arrange to pick them up.  This includes radios. TABLEOF CONTENTS

SCHOOL CALENDAR

Since the majority of our students live within the AltonSchool District, the School will generally follow the Alton school calendar.  TABLEOF CONTENTS

SCHOOL CANCELLATIONS

Same as the Alton School District.  Closings will beannounced every 10 minutes from 6:10 – 8:30 AM on WBGZ AM-1570.  Theywill not always announce “Faith Lutheran”, so please listen for Alton SchoolDistrict. TABLEOF CONTENTS

SCHOOL HOURS

3 year Pre-School      8:30 –11:30 a.m. (Tuesday, Thursday)

4 year Pre-School      8:30 –11:30 a.m. (Monday, Wednesday, Friday)

K – 8th Grade       8:30 – 3:10 p.m.

No children are to be left unattended or expected toenter school building before 8:15am. Doors will be opened at 8:15 am, classeswill start promptly at 8:30am. Students who are not picked up in a timely mannermust have a parent/guardian come to the classroom of the teacher on duty to pickup their child. TABLEOF CONTENTS

SCHOOL WORK and ASSIGNMENTS

Children are given opportunities in school to completemany of their assignments.  However, homework is necessary for the studentsto properly complete their work and do it well.   The amount ofhomework fluctuates with grade level and each child. If parents have concernswith the amount of time their child is spending on homework, please discuss thesituation with the teacher.

Parents should show an interest and concern in theirchild’s work by frequently checking and discussing it with the child. Children should be urged to prepare their work neatly and accurately and tosubmit the assignments on time.

Children who miss assignments due to absences will havetime to turn in their assignments at a later date. TABLEOF CONTENTS

SNACKS

Nutrition is stressed in the daily snack. Pre-school parents provide snacks for these classes.

STANDARDS

The Faith Lutheran School’s course of study is guidedby the educational requirements of the State of Illinois.  Our teachers arecertified by the State of Illinois.  We follow state regulations relativeto attendance, health examinations, safety precautions, holidays, and othermatters, which concern the welfare of the pupils and the community.  Theschool is supervised by the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.  The SchoolBoard of Faith Lutheran Church, with the counsel and advice of the Pastorcarefully supervises the School Program.  The School Board meets monthly. TABLEOF CONTENTS

STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITIES

Students should be performing to the best of theirability.  Therefore school work should be neat, accurate, and complete. In addition, students are expected to keep their desks and surroundings inorder.  Also the student is responsible to obey school and class rules. Furthermore, students are expected to treat school staff and fellow studentswith respect.

Once a child arrives at school, he is expected to remainon the premises unless permission to leave is obtained. TABLEOF CONTENTS

TARDINESS

Arriving at school on time promotes a sense ofpunctuality and responsibility and prevents disruption of classes already inprogress.  It is also of concern that the child may miss an importantlearning experience.  A child who arrives after 8:30 is tardy and will berecorded on their report card.

Consequences of Tardiness:

After the child’s third (3rd) unexcusedtardiness, per quarter, the parents will be contacted to discuss solutions tothe problem. TABLEOF CONTENTS

TESTING

Standardized tests are administered as needed. Achievement tests are conducted annually.  Test scores are available uponrequest. TABLEOF CONTENTS

TRANSFERS

If a child is transferring from Faith Lutheran School,the parents should notify the teacher of the date the child is leaving and thename and address of the school he will be attending, so the transfer of recordscan be prepared.  These records need to be presented to the principal ofthe new school.

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation requires much cooperation by parents. Good stewardship suggests carpools or similar arrangements.  If you haveany transportation difficulties, we will try to assist you. TABLEOF CONTENTS

TUITION and FEES

Tuition payments will be due on or before the 15thof each month and are expected to be kept current.
