About Our Church Faith Lutheran Church is a caring community of Christians who gather around the Word of God in worship, prayer, bible study, and fellowship. It is through Gods Word that we come to know the good news that Jesus Christ is the only Savior of mankind. At Faith we are a church that is committed to knowing Christ and making Christ known to the world. And this is Gods will and command. Therefore we seek to be involved in missions locally and globally. So that through the proclamation of the gospel, people would come to the knowledge of salvation through Jesus Christ. Along with the message of Christ we seek to help others through acts of service, thus showing forth true fruits of faith to the glory of God and the benefit of His people. Faith has a current membership of more than 350 souls. It is diverse with all ages well represented. Many of our families take advantage of the excellent education offered by Faith Lutheran School. Faith is part of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. This worldwide denomination was founded in 1847 in Missouri, therefore the name "Missouri Synod." Today the LCMS is a diverse church body of 2.7 million members. The word Synod means, to walk together. Along with 6300 other congregations in the LCMS, we walk together to accomplish mission and ministry goals that would be impossible for a congregation to accomplish alone. This includes the training of pastors, teachers, and professional church workers. The synod also trains and sends missionaries around the world. It prepares Bible studies for all ages, worship services, radio and video materials. And additionally it is recognized as one of the leaders in World Relief. And so each week, we designate a part of our offerings and tithes to support the work of the LCMS. 'Speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Him who is the Head, that is, the Christ. From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work' (Ephesians 4:15-16).
Brief History of Faith GodfreyFaith Lutheran Godfrey On the Move: Following WW II, people began moving to the outlying areas of Alton. Some of these pioneers, members of Trinity Lutheran Alton, began to discuss the need for a church closer to home. So it was that by the grace of God, Trinity became mother to a new mission. It started with a Bible Study in September, 1950. William Goerss (student at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, the first of many CSL men to serve Faith) led the study attended by about 20. The study group grew gradually. Eventually, plans were made to add a church service with both the Word and Sacraments. January 18, 1952 is the date of that first service. Then on November 4 1952, Jordan Arft was installed as the first of nine pastors to serve Faith including Revs Schroeder, Nickel, Giraud, Fitz, Zimmerman, Reimnitz, Deterding, and Mitteis . . . along with numerous vacancy pastors. Landmark Events: Organizational Sunday May 24, 1953, 65 sign the new constitution. Dedication of A New Church of Our Own February 1955 with all the fanfare that 47 confirmed members could muster. Dedication of Our Second New Church January 21, 1968 with all the fanfare that 200 Christians could muster. Formation of the Faith School 1982. Times of Growth, Struggle, and Always Gods Blessings 1950 2007. In Conclusion: Back in 1998, Don Warner wrote in A Brief History of FAITH, Our history demonstrates one main theme, that the Lord uses ordinary people and through His Spirit empowers them to spread His word. Today the members of Faith continue to meet to muster a fanfare of praise and then joyfully go out to share the theme of our praise, Jesus Christ Savior and Lord. Praise the Lord, O my soul |
